Since our establishment in January 2000, Balinfern Associates has been approached to undertake a range of consultancies based principally on the established professional reputations of each of the partners. Some examples of the consultancies we have undertaken are outlined below: The University of New England We have been contracted by the Pro Vice Chancellor Research and the Research Services Office at the University of New England to assist them and their research staff in various activities associated with the development of the university's profile in the ARC and NHMRC grants schemes. RMIT University For four years we were engaged to assist researchers at RMIT develop their research grant applications for funding rounds for the National Health and Medical Research Council, and both the Linkgage and Discovery grant rounds of the Australian Research Council. Southern Cross University We assisted the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) in the recruitment of a Research Development Director to oversee the research management and development functions of the university. Australian Plant DNA Bank We assisted the emergent Australian Plant DNA Bank through its planning stage in developing workable strategic plans, as well as operating plans for its initial year of operations. Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) We assisted the Director of the CCIA in drafting funding documents for a new collaborative research project involving a significant industry partner form the USA, and have assisted staff of the CCIA in the development of research funding applications. The University of New South Wales We were engaged by the University of New South Wales, through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International), to facilitate the management of all aspects of the university's research application processes to the Australian Research Council (ARC), Discovery and Linkage; and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Australian National Committee on HIV AIDS and Related Diseases (ANCAHRD), The Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health and The University of New South Wales We were engaged to assist the US National Institutes of Health funded HIV vaccine trial being conducted through the University of NSW, the Australian National University, Melbourne University and CSIRO, to review management structures for the consortium and develop revised structures for the new phase the vaccine program was entering. La Trobe University We were engaged by La Trobe University to assist them in preparing for, and then undertaking the management of the next grants round from the Australian Research Council Linkage Grants Scheme. We were also asked to review existing support mechanisms and structures in their Office of Research and Graduate Studies to ensure appropriate support services were in place to assist researchers across the university. Southern Cross University We were engaged by the Pro-Vice Chancellor and Vice President, Research, in a continuing capacity to assist and advise Southern Cross University in aspects of research management, with an emphasis on funding submissions, research contract negotiation and intellectual property management. Examples of projects we assisted Southern Cross University include the Major National Research Facilities Program and the Systemic Infrastructure Facilities Program, as well as assisting researchers in the development of research grants applications. BioProspect Limited We were engaged in association with Southern Cross University and James Cook University to manage and negotiate, then draft an application to the Australian Government for funding for a Major National Research Facility for the Australian Biodiversity and Biodiscovery Resources Centre. The University of New South Wales We were engaged by the University of New South Wales, through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International), to facilitate the management of all aspects of the university's research application processes to the Australian Research Council (ARC), Discovery and Linkage; and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Social Policy Research Centre We assisted the Centre in working towards the preparation of a funding submission to the Commonwealth for an extension of their core funding. This was the first time that the Centre had been asked to 'apply' for future annual funding in its 20 plus year history. We have also subsequently assisted researchers in development of research grant applications. The University of New South Wales We were engaged by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research), UNSW, to assess, and then assist applicants redraft Australian Research Council 'Strategic Partnerships with Industry Research and Training Scheme' (SPIRT) applications being submitted by staff at the University. Australian National Committee on HIV AIDS and Related Diseases (ANCAHRD), The Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health We were engaged by ANCAHRD to assist in establishing an Australian trial of a HIV Vaccine. This involved extensive detailed negotiation with all the parties both in Australia and overseas, and in both the private and public sectors, to establish both a collaborative environment, and then a documented agreement to facilitate the trial. This project culminated in the international media announcement of the award of a AU$27 m contract from the US Government (National Institutes of Health-NIH) to the Australian applicants. Faculty of Engineering, the University of New South Wales We were contracted by the Dean of Engineering, to provide detailed assistance to all applicants from the Faculty of Engineering applying for Australian Research Council 'Strategic Partnerships with Industry Research and Training Scheme' (SPIRT) grants in the negotiation and drafting of their applications. We were then subsequently asked to review and rewrite all Australian Research Council Research Infrastructure and Equipment Facilities (RIEF) applications to be submitted by this Faculty. We also provided counsel and assistance in drafting applications from staff in this Faculty to the internal UNSW Capital Grant Scheme. VIRAX Holdings Pty Ltd We advised Virax on contract negotiation with a large Australian university in relation to technology transfer and commercialisation associated with an intellectual property license Virax has from that university. The University of New South Wales We were asked by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and International) to help UNSW to assess, and then assist applicants redraft Australian Research Council 'Strategic Partnerships with Industry Research and Training Scheme' (SPIRT) applications being submitted by staff at the University. The University of New South Wales We were engaged by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and International) to coordinate the University's procedures for, and to undertake the assessment, negotiation and redrafting of all Australian Research Council Large Grant and National Health and Medical Research Council Project Grant and Fellowship applications submitted by UNSW. This amounted to nearly 300 ARC large grant applications, 60 fellowship applications and nearly 200 NHMRC project grant applications. The above are examples only. There are a number of other projects, already undertaken, or under discussion, which by their nature must remain confidential.
